Retaining Walls in Medford, OR

Engineered block walls, terraced slopes, and built-in steps that hold back Rogue Valley hillsides and turn unusable grade into living space.

Retaining wall construction for sloped Rogue Valley lots

A lot of Medford and Eagle Point properties sit on a grade. Left alone, that slope erodes every winter, sheds water toward the house, and wastes square footage you could be using. A properly built retaining wall fixes all three. More Life builds segmental block walls, terraced planter walls, and seat-height garden walls that are designed for the load they carry, not just stacked to look good on day one.

Every wall starts below ground. We excavate to firm soil, lay a compacted crushed-rock base, set the first course dead level, and backfill with clean drain rock and perforated pipe so water never builds up behind the wall. Taller walls get geogrid reinforcement tied back into the slope. It is the unglamorous part of the job, and it is the reason our walls are still straight years later.

What we build

  • Segmental block retaining walls (Allan Block, Belgard, and similar systems)
  • Terraced walls that turn one steep slope into usable tiers
  • Built-in steps, landings, and stair treads cut into the wall
  • Seat walls and raised planter walls around patios
  • Boulder and natural-stone walls for a softer look
  • Grading, drainage, and backfill behind the wall

Why drainage matters here

Southern Oregon soils run heavy on clay. Clay holds water, and water behind a wall is what pushes block out of line and tips fence posts. That is why every More Life wall gets drain rock, a perforated drain line to daylight, and a filter fabric layer behind the block. On lots in Ashland and Jacksonville with real elevation change, we also tie the wall into a yard drainage plan so runoff goes where it should.

How a retaining wall project goes

Site visit and quote: Jose walks the slope with you, checks access for materials, and gives you a written price, usually within a day. Build: most residential walls take two to five days depending on height and length. Finish: we backfill, grade, and leave the site clean. If you want sod, plants, or a paver patio above the wall, the same crew handles it, so there is no hand-off between contractors.

“More Life refreshed my landscaping: took out lawns, built a decorative wall, planted new trees, etc. They do a high quality and professional job for a reasonable price. Jose is personable and very pleasant to work with.”

FAQ

Retaining Walls Questions

Question 1How much does a retaining wall cost in Medford?

It depends on height, length, block style, and how hard the site is to reach. Short garden walls are very affordable; taller engineered walls cost more because of excavation, drain rock, and geogrid. We give a firm written quote after a free site visit, so there are no surprises.

Question 2Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Jackson County?

Walls under four feet usually do not need a permit. Taller walls, or walls holding back a surcharge like a driveway, often do. We will tell you up front if your project needs one and help with what the county asks for.

Question 3Can you build a retaining wall on a steep backyard slope?

Yes. Terracing a steep slope into two or three shorter walls is often stronger and better looking than one tall wall, and it creates flat planting or patio space on each level.

Question 4How long will a block retaining wall last?

Built with a compacted base, proper drainage, and geogrid where needed, a segmental block wall should last for decades. Most failures we see on older walls come from missing drainage, which is why we never skip it.
